Image for Global Ethics Day: voor wanneer de schone programmeurs?

From question to solution, part 2: Accelerometer based movement detection August 27, 2021

Image for From question to solution, part 2: Accelerometer based movement detection

In part 1 of this blog post, we have talked about the scientific method and how to apply it to business problems. In this part, we will focus on applying this method to a real-world problem. The problem we tackled started with a question from the client: We would like to know when trains are present at the platform. We would like to have this information to be accurate within a few seconds. Is that possible?

From question to solution: Part 1. The scientific method August 2, 2021

For simple problems, one can get away with a non-systematic approach and tap from the same barrel of known truths and assumed knowledge. This can happen because the path from question to the solution is one straight line without many hurdles to take. However, when the problem becomes highly complex, and there aren’t many known truths, the simplest way to a solution is always a systematic approach. This is where the scientific method of problem investigation comes into play.

The question is ‘Why?’… The answer is quite simple: IT specialists put great focus on the product and how the end-product is going to look like/function, and less on why a product is needed. And this mindset is often, unfortunately the cause of failed digital tools. Luckily, the IT industry is slowly evolving from a technology/product-first approach to an end-user-first approach. At Flow Pilots we use Design Sprints to ensu

Image for 5 things you should take into account when thinking about your company’s digital transformation

As we position ourselves as a company that can help you in your digital transformation journey, the question is raised, ‘what is digital transformation’?The concept itself still provokes mixed feelings as both words entail change. A shift from analog to digital and to change the way you are working. It’s about learning new skills, stretching yourself and the organisation in adapting a new way of working and investing time and money for an uncertain outcome.

Image for My internship at Flow Pilots: making the app Call’y, by Bram Ravijts

For my internship, I was tasked to make Call’y, a to-do list for calls you have to make. This was my first experience working with Xamarin and the more specific parts of Android like notifications, permissions and interaction with other apps. I also had to work with a framework called MvvmCross, which I had never heard of before. In this post I’ll show which problems and tasks I tackled when making the Call’y app.

Image for 4 Tips to create a good workflow at home

We, Flow Pilots, are professional remote workers. Although we love our time amongst our colleagues in our beautiful Antwerp office we're perfectly organised to keep a good workflow at home.

When our government advised us to work from home, we were fully prepared and equipped to maintain our optimal workflow.

Problem-solving is an integral part of a lot of professions. Yet everyone struggles with it one time or another. There are a lot of known truths, guidelines and assumed knowledge out there but I find it’s very easy to skip the relevant steps when you need them. In this post I’d like to formalise some of these steps as a guideline and explain why they are important during your process.
